La Libye a connu un putsch militaire au matin du vendredi 14 février 2014. Le renversement du pouvoir s’est matérialisé par la suspension du gouvernement et du parlement. Il est conduit par l’armée libyenne sous l’égide de Khalifa Hafter, ancien général des forces terrestres libyennes.
Selon une déclaration faite à ce propos, Khalifa Hafter justifie cette démarche par la nécessité de protéger la population libyenne contre la violence des milices militaires. Il a ajouté que l’armée a été obligée d’intervenir pour éviter à la Libye de perdre ses ressources et de voir sa population décimée.
Il a tenu à préciser que ce mouvement n’est pas un putsch militaire dans le sens traditionnel du terme et que ce n’est pas une voie pour la mise en place d’un pouvoir militaire. Pour le prouver, les chefs de l’armée libyenne vont présenter une feuille de route dont les détails seront connus dans quelques jours après avoir été discuté avec les forces politiques du pays. Les premiers pas de cette feuille de route seront la mise en place d’une instance présidentielle qui devra charger une personne de constituer un gouvernement restreint et temporaire. Une instance de défense nationale, relevant de l’instance présidentielle, sera également créée. Cette instance se chargera de toutes les affaires concernant la défense du territoire libyen et la sûreté intérieure.
Il est également question d’activer les lois transitionnelles pour assurer le respect de la loi. Khalifa Hafter a ajouté que l’espoir était de mise et qu’il est temps de se consacrer au travail et à la construction de la nation libyenne. Pour conclure, la direction générale de l’armée demande au peuple de l’aider dans cette mission en ajoutant qu’ils pouvaient continuer à vivre normalement. Khalifa Hafter a également invité l’ensemble des forces de l’ordre libyennes à rejoindre leurs postes et à aider au sauvetage du pays. Il a conclu en disant que tous les engagements extérieurs et les accords bilatéraux de la Libye seront respectés et qu’il n’est pas question de les remettre en cause.
Le chef du gouvernement libyen, Ali Zeidan, a réagi à l’annonce faite par les militaires libyens. Il a déclaré qu’il était hors de question de tolérer le « vol de la révolution », selon ses dires sur la chaîne Al Alrabiya. Il a également déclaré que les mesures nécessaires seront prises contre Khalifa Hafter en précisant que le gouvernement et le parlement poursuivaient leurs fonctions normalement. Ali Zeidan a également appelé l’armée libyenne à faire preuve de responsabilité.

La chaîne de télévision CNN décrit l’histoire de cet homme comme « un thriller politique » et note : « Celui qui a d’abord été le confident de Mouammar Kadhafi devient par la suite son ennemi juré. Il a d’abord dirigé un groupe d’exilés libyens qui tentaient de renverser le régime libyen avant d’être exilé dans le secret aux Etats-Unis quand les choses allaient mal ».
Alors qu’il a été fraîchement nommé chef d’état-major de l’armée libyenne, en 2011, Khalifa Haftar avait déclaré à la télévision locale que « les voisins qui voient la Libye inférieure sont des pays hostiles, y compris la Tunisie, l’Egypte, le Mali, l’Algérie et le Tchad », des pays qu’il considère comme « ennemis ». Il ajoute également qu’en tant que chef de l’armée, « il devra trouver la force en son armée pour faire face à ceux qui perçoivent la Libye comme une nation inférieure ».
Les États-Unis aurait déplacé l’un de ses navires de guerre en dehors du golfe Persique alors que le pays est à la recherche d’un accord global avec l’Iran et sa puissance nucléaire.
Le porte-avions à propulsion nucléaire USS Harry S. Truman, qui est le seul navire de guerre américain dans la région, « a passé plus de temps à l’extérieur du golfe Persique au cours des six derniers mois que l’intérieur», selon un rapport publié par The Hill.

The activity began around 12:00 Noon, Mountain Standard Time (MST) on February 1, and was detected by a seismometer in Borehole B944 then continued, non-stop, all day yesterday getting worse and worse as the hours wore on. The activity is continuing right now at 6:06 EST AM as this news article is being produced.

The readings being reported from seismometer inside Bore Hole #B944 are literally « off-the-scale. » Is an earthquake brewing, or is this the beginning of a catastrophic eruption of the Yellowstone « Super Volcano? »

C’est le 7 février 1914, en effet, qu’est apparu pour la première fois le personnage de Charlot, le vagabond inventé par Charlie Chaplin. Le film, intitulé Kid Auto Races at Venice, est en ligne sur YouTube. Faites-vous plaisir. C’est aussi drôle qu’au premier jour, et ça ne dure que six minutes.
On peut y voir Charlot déambulant parmi la foule, pendant une course de boîtes à savon. Voyant qu’une équipe de cinéma filme l’événement, il cherche par tous les moyens à être dans le champ de la caméra. Le réalisateur s’emporte et le botte hors du cadre. Une fois. Deux fois. Trois fois. Mais il revient à la charge, chapeau de travers, cigarette au bec. Baveux, arrogant, obstiné.
Produit par un Québécois d’origine (Mack Sennett, né à Danville!) et réalisé par Henry Lehrman, Kid Auto Races (en français, Charlot est content de lui) est le fruit d’une totale improvisation de la part de Chaplin. Le tournage n’aurait pas pris plus de 45 minutes. Et, bien sûr, le public n’était pas dans le coup. Indifférents au départ, les spectateurs finissent par s’amuser des pitreries de Charlot, sans savoir qu’ils assistent à la naissance d’un futur monstre du cinéma.
Ce n’était pas la première fois, cela dit, que l’acteur endossait son costume de vagabond.
En fait, Kid Auro Races est le deuxième film où apparaît Charlot. C’est Mabel’s Strange Predicament, tourné un jour plus tôt, qui marque la véritable entrée en scène du personnage.
À la recherche d’un déguisement, Chaplin était ressorti du costumier avec sa fameuse canne, sa moustache et son chapeau melon, accessoires qui ne le quitteront plus par la suite, même si le personnage lui-même évoluera substantiellement sur le plan psychologique (moins baveux, plus chevaleresque). Mais pour des raisons de montage, Mabel’s ne sortira pas sur les écrans avant le 9 février, deux jours après Kid Auto Races at Venice.
Peu importe. Avant la fin de l’année, «Charlot» Chaplin était déjà devenu une immense star, signant un mirobolant contrat de 1250$ par semaine avec la maison de productions Essanay. L’équivalent aujourd’hui de 28 232$ par semaine! Il n’y a pas de prix pour le génie. And the rest is history …
